Tabula Rasa by Ben Alper 2011
Ben Alper is an artist based in North Carolina. He curates The Archival Impulse, a project dedicated to his personal collection of vernacular photography.
I see many of my recent projects as being fundamentally inquisitive, rather than declarative, in regard to memory. There is no articulated claim being made. Instead, I hope the work raises questions about how we order, archive and recall photographs in service of creating personal or historical narratives for ourselves.
His work employs a dated, torn, faded imagery, recalling decades past. Photography becomes for Alper, almost a physical act.
